Newborns grow fast, spit up often, and in Mumbai they spend most of the year in warm, humid weather. That changes what "essential" means: fewer pieces, softer fabrics, and clothes that are quick to change at 3 a.m.
This checklist covers the first three months. Buy the smaller quantities first — you can always add more once you know your baby's size and your washing rhythm.
The short list
| Item | How many | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Short-sleeve bodysuits (onesies) | 6–8 | The everyday base layer in warm weather |
| Sleeveless vests (jhablas) | 4–6 | Light, airy and easy to slip on |
| Long-sleeve bodysuits | 2–3 | For air-conditioned rooms and cooler nights |
| Pyjama sets / sleepsuits | 3–4 | Night and nap wear |
| Soft cotton pants or leggings | 3–4 | Pair with vests for a full outfit |
| Mittens and booties | 2 pairs | Optional, but handy in the first weeks |
| Caps | 1–2 | For AC rooms or evening outings |
| Swaddles / muslin wraps | 3–4 | Wrapping, burping, shade — endlessly useful |
| Bibs | 4–6 | Dribble and feeding |
That's roughly 25–35 pieces. It sounds like a lot, but a newborn can go through three outfits a day, and you don't want to be washing every night.
Fabric first, prints second
For the first months, fabric matters more than anything else. Look for soft, breathable cotton with smooth inside seams, and check that labels are printed on or easy to remove. Our guide to the best fabrics for baby clothes covers what to look for and what to avoid.
Sizes: don't buy everything in "Newborn"
Many babies outgrow newborn-size clothes within a few weeks. A safer split is a few pieces in newborn size and most of the list in 0–3 months, especially bodysuits and pyjamas. If you're unsure, read how to measure your child and choose the right size.
Easy to put on beats cute
Front-open or envelope-neck styles, snap buttons at the bottom and stretchy necklines make changes faster — and calmer — for both of you. Pieces that go over the head with a narrow neck tend to end up at the back of the cupboard.
What you can skip for now
- Shoes. Babies don't need them until they walk. Socks or booties are enough.
- Heavy jackets. In Mumbai, a light long-sleeve layer covers most cool moments.
- Fancy outfits in newborn size. Save occasion wear for 3–6 months, when it will be worn more than once.
- Big multipacks of one style. Buy a few, see what works for your baby, then buy more.
Before the first wear
Wash everything once before your baby wears it — new clothes carry finishing residues from manufacturing and handling, and a gentle wash makes them softer too. Here's how to wash baby clothes without wearing them out.
